back to the future

Interesting plans on tap for today. I’m headed to my alma mater to be the featured guest at a gathering of the Catholic students on campus to talk about social justice. When I was a student a this small liberal arts college in Portland, I didn’t realize there were any Catholic students on campus. To be honest, I’d run as far away as I could from my own Catholic school days and upbringing. I was involved in a variety of activist causes, but in the secular world as I wasn’t touching anything related to the church with a 10 foot pole during my college years. Hence the irony that I’m now returning to campus to try to share the church’s tradition of social teaching and perhaps inspire them to work for peace and justice as a part of living out their faith in the world.

To add to the irony, we’ll be meeting in the lounge of my old dorm! I was thinking back to what would have been the last time I was in that dorm. And realized these students would have been 6 or 7 years old at the time. That’s got to make you feel old.

In any case, if you’re reading this before or around 1:30 pm pacific time, say a little prayer for me. I’m still new to this public role I keep finding myself in, so I’m a little nervous. Not quite sure how I got into particular speaking engagement, which is usually a clue to me that Someone has confidence that I can do this. So maybe I should spend some time praying about it this morning as well.

Update - went well. A neat group of young adults. I will keep them in my prayers.

It was a bit odd to be in the old dorm. Exactly the same but completely different. And they are so young!!!! Or rather, I am no longer so young.
