Losing Voice

Well, irony of all ironies, I am headed to a conference of 800+ women religious leaders to tell them the good news of younger women religious and our grassroots peer-led organization, Giving Voice.  Except that I have lost my voice!

I've been a good girl, rested, plenty of fluids, refrained from talking for the most part.  But less than 24 hours before I'm supposed to be standing in our booth in the exhibit hall talking about Giving Voice and ... no voice.

It's not a total disaster. Another young nun friend is coming with me to work the first two days of the exhibit, and as far as I know she has the capability of talking!  And I'm still hopeful that my rest, fluids, no talking regime will result in a miraculous recovery.  If not, it will at least be interesting.

And really, it's an example in humility and taking life as it comes.  There are some things that we can't really do anything about.  No amount of planning, will power, or desire can circumvent them.  We just have to go with the flow and trust that all will be well.  This, my friends, is one of those moments.

Healthy for Life

You Are 68% Healthy

Your diet is quite healthy, but you don't too crazy with what you eat.

You know how to eat what's good for you, but you're also careful not to deprive yourself.

And that's the healthiest way to be!

I actually started weight watchers again about six weeks ago ... after seven years away. During the hiatus, I had stayed somewhat to eating what I knew was good for me. But not always, and when you're not paying attention to portions, they have a tendency of getting bigger. Living in community also added a new twist, not always being in control of what's for dinner but living with folks who eat healthy food for the most part.

So I made the decision to be more intentional about what I'm eating. Of course, I'd like to lose weight, but mainly I just want to be healthy. This summer I turn 39, which means 40 is right around the corner, which means the time is now to make these healthy changes for a lifetime of ministry, community and quality relationships.

So far, things are going pretty well. I had a significant weight loss to begin with--when I was being very religious about the whole thing. Now it's more of a very slow steps in the right direction and continuing to integrate healthy habits into my life.

The next three weeks will be a bit of a challenge as I'll be travelling, first for a community meeting then a visit with my Dad then retreat. But all will be well.

moving my you know what

Hmmm ... not so sure about this quiz result, although given that I am trying to be more intentional and regular with exercise these days, perhaps I would newly qualify as conscientious (and reforming couch potato). No gym membership these days ... I'm recently back to my old friend the exercise video.

Your Fitness Type is Conscientious

You are committed to fitness and good health. That's motivation enough to keep exercising.

It's likely that you belong to a gym where you can get in a variety of exercise. You're always pushing yourself to be stronger and better.

You value routine, and sometimes you're reluctant to deviate from what you've grown to love.

Try to add one or two new exercises to the mix every so often. Your body will get even stronger from being shocked.

morning health related blog quiz

Yes, my first post back from the blog break is a silly blog quiz. But it has a purpose! You see, I've started recently being more intentional about my desire to be healthy. Eating better, getting regular exercise, time and space for quiet and reflection in the midst of my busy busy schedule. I forget how long it takes for a habit to set in, but so far it's been a week and a half. Being intentional takes lots of concentration! Hopefully, I'll at least become a roasted couch potato in the near future (see blog quiz for explanation)

You Are A Couch French Fry

You've got a little couch potato in you. You definitely like to relax.

You couldn't spend all night on the couch, but you do treasure your downtime.

Make sure you seek a good balance between your playtime and rest time.

Too much time on the couch is bad for your mind and your body.
