beam me up scotty

This morning as I went to my spiritual direction appointment in Elizabeth, NJ, my usual parking spot was taken so I parked on the other side of the street. After my appointment I returned to my car and was preparing to pull into the street and make my merry way home when I looked up at the plaque outside the building where I was parked. The building is apparently called the "James T. Kirk Gardens."

What? Needless to say I was confused. My first though was maybe he'd given money to what looked like some sort of housing for the elderly. But then I realized he's a fictional character - it didn't say "William Shatner Gardens" after all.

Me being me I looked it up on the internet when I got home. Turns out James T. Kirk - in addition to being Captain of the Enterprise - was also Mayor of Elizabeth, NJ from 1939-1951. Who knew?? Perhaps he's Captain Kirk's great great great great etc... grandfather (according to Wikipedia Captain Kirk was - or will be - "born" in 2233).

This apostolic year is starting none to soon! You have entirely too much time on your hands!

Very funny Terry.

One day soon I'm sure I'll be pining for the days of my canonical year when I had more time than I knew what to do with. ;)

You might be interested to know that the McGill University students here in Montreal named their student union building after William Shatner, an alumnus. It had nothing to do with any contribution he made to his alma mater, but rather student whimsy.
