confessions of a transit geek

I've always loved to ride public transit. As a little girl one of my favorite things was taking the Metro into DC with my mom. We'd visit my Dad at work or go to a museum. When I was a little older and my mom was working on Capitol Hill, I'd take the Metro into DC on my own and meet her for lunch.

When I was working and living in Portland, I took the bus to work every day. I lived in a neighborhood with great bus service and worked downtown. In fact, for seven years I didn't even own a car!

Whenever I visit a new City, I always enjoy exploring on foot and figuring out how the public transit works. Luckily these days most transit systems have an online trip planner that makes this a little easier. But in any case, I find it fun. This was one of my favorite parts about my time in London! Yes, I admit it. I am a transit geek. ;-)

Why am I sharing this with you???? Today, I was able to use my transit-geekdom to help someone. I showed one of our clients how to take public transit from our offices to her house. It was kind of cool to share my love of public transit with someone in need!

Any thoughts on the "T" in Boston? It could sure use an overhaul!

When we were visiting Rome, we took public transportation everywhere. It really lets you experience a city as a local.

I've never been to Rome - although I did ride the boat/buses in Venice.

As to Boston, I haven't been there since I was 13. I remember thinking the T was cool but old ...

The only time I really mind public transit is when I'm grocery shopping. I absolutely hate having to lug my groceries around either on foot or by bus.

I was lucky in that when I didn't own a car, I walked right by the grocery store on my way home from work - and it was only a few blocks away. As a result, I used to go grocery shopping every few days, buying only a few items at a time to reduce the "lug" factor! :)

See, I live a couple blocks from a Trader Joe's, so that would theoretically work...if I could bring myself to go grocery shopping regularly. I *hate* grocery shopping, because it involves lugging, but if I went more often, I wouldn't have to lug. Vicious circle. :) Fortunately the Hoopy Frood doesn't mind doing the shopping.
