Blessed Marianne Cope (1838-1918) was a Sister of St. Francis of Syracuse, NY. Born in Germany, her family emigrated to the US when she was a baby. In her early religious life she was a teacher and principal. In 1883, she answered a call to go to Hawaii to set up a health care system for the sick and poor. She led this mission until her death, living her last 30 years at the settlement for leprosy patients at Kalaupapa, Molokai.
In 2005 she was beatified by Pope Benedit XVI. She was also inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, NY.
