artsy friday five

Courtesy of Songbird, the Revgalblogpal Friday Five is: Whether it was on Broadway or at your neighborhood elementary school, name five experiences of the performing arts that have touched or tickled you.

Unable to share anything else amusing or profound with my bloggy readership, I'll play.

1. Dialogue of the Carmelites, Portland, Opera. Nuns. French Revolution. Guillotine. Hauntingly beautiful.

2. A play, the title and author of which have long since escaped my memory, that was produced at my alma mater during my college days. I recall that it was by a visiting Scottish playwright. In any case, it told the story of group of young people facing an HIV-AIDS diagnosis. I was tender and funny and made amazing use of the song "Killing Me Softly" - the original, not the Fugees remake. I can still hear the song and see the face of the actor, even if the other details escape me.

3. The Sunday Concert Series at the National Gallery of Art in the garden court. My mom & grandma used to take me for these free concerts. I have fond memories of them.

4. No Exit by Imago Theater here in Portland. An ingenious use of the stage - it tilts and pivots as the actors move. Gives a whole new meaning to hell as other people.

5. Hedwig and the Angry Inch by another local company here in Portland whose name escapes me. I'd already seen the movie, but being in a small space made it much more real.

I loved that production of No Exit, too. Also the Hedwig production with Wade McCollum was excellent--he was hilarious!

Did I see both of those with you oh great sandwich? And the carmelite one too? That is quite possible!
