Petition to End the War

I received a request to sign this petition by e-mail. Click here for the website if you'd like to sign as well.

Four years after the U.S. entered Iraq on a promise of liberation, a bloody civil war is driving a humanitarian and refugee crisis of horrific proportions. In 2003 Pope John Paul II bemoaned the war as "a defeat for humanity". On Easter Sunday, Pope Benedict XVI observed that "nothing positive comes from Iraq, torn apart by continual slaughter as the civil population flees." Americans are realizing that our military might has accomplished all it can, and that peace will not be achieved by sending in more troops.

It's time for Catholics to stand and be counted as a force for real solutions in Iraq. For the first time, we have a chance to end it - in the form of an emergency spending bill Congress will soon send to President Bush. Please sign the Catholic petition below to ask Congress and the White House for Justice in Iraq Now. Our Catholic voice matters and our faith calls us to use it.

Petition to President Bush and Congress

As Catholic Americans we are mindful of the Christian mandate to wage war only in ways that make peace possible. In this spirit, we call upon Congress and President Bush to enact legislation to withdraw U.S. combat forces from Iraq. We further call on our leaders to step up diplomatic efforts to end the conflict, continue to provide economic development assistance, and to maintain a U.S. role in advising and training Iraqi security forces.
