note to self

Note to self: look at the reading of the day BEFORE you sign up to be a lector at mass. I just checked today's 1st Reading which includes these doozies:

Jephthah
Manasseh
Mizpah-Gilead
Aroer
Minnith
Abel-keramim

On top of that, Jephthah ends up killing his daughter at the end, although it's poetically put that he "did to her as he vowed."

Ugghhh .... Oh well, at least since I signed up to read I'm saving one of the older Sisters next door from the task! And I should be grateful I suppose that I remembered to look at the reading before liturgy!

He doesn't just kill her, he sacrifices her to the Lord!

Looks like a "Homily Fun Day" to me!

Jason - funny you should say that about the homily. Our presider used the 1st reading to illustrate, as he said, "What the Jesuit Fathers" say ... that you shouldn't make rash decisions when you're overcome with emotion!

I preferred reading the Responsorial Psalm:

"Sacrifice or oblation you wished not, but ears open to obedience you gave me. Burnt offerings or sin-offerings you sought not;
then said I, “Behold I come.”

I've never been big on the whole sacrificing human beings to God in the old testament.

In any case, the Sisters said I did a good job with those names today. And next time, I will look before I sign up! :)

We have a cool little book on our lectern at church which tells you how to pronounce every single proper noun in the Bible. It has saved my hide any number of times!

Susan, that's exactly the homily our novice master gave!

Funny! A few years ago I was visiting a friend's church and in a friendly way the pastor asked me if I wanted to read and I replied, "yeah, if I can check out the lection ahead of time." He replied, "of course, but there are no Melchizedeks in this reading." I really and truly imagined the *M* word was the height of unprepared lector perplexity, but your list tops anything I could've imagined--thanks!
