Twenty-nine years ago today Archbishop Oscar Romero was assassinated for standing on the side of the poor in El Salvador.
I took this picture a few blocks from where he was killed while saying mass in San Salvador. If you don't know much about this 20th Century Martyr, I recommend checking out the movie Romero with Raul Julia.
"When the church hears the cry of the oppressed it cannot but denounce the social structures that give rise to and perpetuate the misery from which the cry arises."

I met someone not long ago who was there that day, as a little boy. He ended up fleeing to the U.S. with his family because he became a target (I think he was only 10 or 12 at the time). Such a tragic event.
Knowing these stories makes me feel very blessed to live in the United States. But I hope it draws out of all of us compassion (and maybe even action!) for those who continue to live in war-torn places and unjust societies.
Thanks for sharing, Sr Susan.
