As the title says, it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas. We're planning to decorate our house on Saturday. Both neighbors have major Christmas lights outside--have for weeks. I was saying last night that it's like our house is an oasis of Advent, in the middle of Christmas!
It always makes me sad when everyone takes their decorations down the day after Christmas. I understand why--they've had them up forever!--but it seems like they're missing out. By celebrating Advent AND the entire Season of Christmas, it's like a two for one deal. Growing up, we always kept Christmas decorations up until Epiphany on January 6th. In fact, the Kings didn't finish their journey through the house to the creche until then!
I feel like somehow the farther away we get from the original meaning of Christmas, and the more it becomes a commercial holiday, we miss out on something. Which is why I'm always happy when the Charlie Brown Christmas Special comes on tv. It's probably the most religious moment on national tv during the Christmas season ... when else does a cartoon character reverently recite Scripture? It's also one of the only times Christ and God are mentioned in a Christmas special!
It was on tonight. Christmas is a week and 2 days away. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!

Apparently ABC edited out some of the anti-commercialization messages in order to fit in more commercials.
Reminds me of that ol' Christmas standard: "I'm Dreaming of an Ironic Christmas."
