Occasional musings of a Generation X Sister of St. Joseph of Peace. Read along as I live into a life of love and service as a modern day Catholic Sister (aka "nun") and continue to discern my call to "act justly, love tenderly and walk humbly with God."

priorities
The picture above is a screenshot I took today of the Religion articles from WashingtonPost.com. ("Catholics Weigh Mass Changes, Terrorists Called Holy Warriors, Episcopalians Mull Gay Bishops).
It causes one to wonder if the priorities of God's people on earth match the priorities of God's own heart. With all the violence, poverty, discrimination and injustice in the world, I wonder what God/Allah/Jesus would think about us spending time and energy arguing over correct and holy ways to worship, kill eachother and wield power in God's church.
No comments really, other than a general wondering if this is really what we're supposed to be about during our time here on earth ...

Tough one. Our priorities are almost certainly not God's - that's something we have to continually keep working on. I suspect no one really gets it right - at least not all of the time. On the other hand, God does call us to holiness, and sexual purity is clearly an important concern in scripture. Stepping aside for a moment from the question of who's right about God's views of same-sex sexual relations, it's fair to ask if He has standards for our sex lives, and if so, whether the Churches we are affiliated with are true to those standards. It's also fair to ask if they are true to His standards about greed, envy, justice, etc. It's HARD to bring all of your life into subjection (at least, it's hard for me).
We need to focus on the weightier matters of the law. There's a danger, though, that when we go to identify them, we'll give greatest weight to the teachings that are most appealing to us and are easiest for us to support and do.
